Colonel Harland Sanders
Harland Sanders was born on September 9, 1870 in Henryville Indiana. Sanders parents were Wilbur David and Margaret Ann. When Sanders was six years old his father died from a fever so his mother was forced to work while Harland took care of his siblings. When Sanders took care of his siblings he had to cook and started perfecting different foods. Sanders dropped out of school when he was in the sixth grade to be able to do his job at his house.
In 1935 Kentucky governor Ruby Laffoon named Harland Sanders a Colonel because of his contributions to the states food. At this time Sanders was 45years old and owned one restaurant named “Sanders court and Café”. At that Court and Café Sanders was perfecting his fried chicken recipe. Sanders perfected his recipe and cooking method with 11 different herbs and spices that are still used today, in 1940. Then, in 1949 Sanders married Claudia Price.
When Sanders turned 65 an interstate was built taking away most of the traffic in “Sanders Court and Café’ so Sanders started selling his chicken to other restaurants for $.05 per piece. Then in 1952 Sanders opened his first KFC franchise restaurant in Salt Lake City, Utah. By 1960 Sanders had opened up 400 franchise restaurants in the U.S. and Canada. Then, In 1964 Colonel Harland Sanders sold KFC for $2million to John Y. Brown Jr.
In 1980 Colonel Sanders was diagnosed with Leukemia and died December 16th 1980 from Leukemia at the age of 90. Colonel Sanders died in the Jewish hospital in Louisville Kentucky. Now there are 13,000 KFC restaurants worldwide that still use the same recipe and cooking methods that Colonel Sanders created.
