The History of Kentucky Fried Chicken
The start of KFC came when a boy named Harland Sanders was six years old and started cooking for his family. Then, at the age of 40, Sanders bought a service station named “Sanders Court and Café” in Corbin Kentucky in 1930. At that service station Sanders started trying to create the recipe that would later become the KFC “secret recipe” for 74 years and counting. Ten years later, in 1940, Sanders came up with a recipe of 11 herbs and spices that is still used today.
15 years later an interstate was built cutting off most of the traffic from “Sanders Court and Café” leaving the future of KFC unknown. Then Sanders started selling his chicken for $0.05 a piece. Sanders was able to sell enough chicken to open the first KFC franchise restaurant in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1952.
By 1960 there were 400 KFC restaurants in the U.S. and Canada. Then, in 1964 the first KFC restaurant overseas was built in England. From 1960-1964 KFC gained 200 new restaurants making the total KFC restaurants in the world 600.
IN 1964 Colonel Harland Sanders sold the KFC franchise to a group of investors led by John Y. Brown Jr. for $2 million. Then in 1971 Heublein Inc. acquired the KFC franchise from John Y. Brown. In 1982 R.J. Reynolds (now known as RJR Nabisco Inc.) took over the KFC franchise. 4 years later, in 1986, Pepsi Co. acquired KFC from RJR Nabisco Inc.
In 1997 David Novak became the CEO of YUM! Brand, a branch of Pepsi, and KFC joined. Then in 2002 Taco Bell and Pizza Hut joined Yum! Brand to create a “restaurant trifecta”. In 2008 KFC changed the logo to the current logo and created grilled chicken in 2009.
